With funds raised by subscription donated by his friends, the men who served with him in Ceylon, local fund raising events and other village monies donated, and was completed by local voluntary labour in 1973.
On retirement, Sir Herbert came to live at the Old Rectory in 1939. He initiated the restoration of the Nation Playing Field after the 1939-45 war and, with his enthusiasm revived the game of cricket.
